A record of the experiences of Gim Gi-su (金綺秀, 1832–?) in Japan.

Following the signing of the 1876 Korea-Japan Treaty (Ganghwadojoyak), he became Tongjeongdaebu on the 22nd day of the second lunar month,

as well as a member of the Envoy as yejo chamui, a position associated with ritual protocols.

He led the 76 envoy members from Busan to Tokyo on the Japan steamer Goryumaru (黃龍丸) and by train.

During his 20–day stay, he observed Japan’s flowering civilization and received great hospitality, and wrote a travelogue on Japan upon returning.

Gim Gi-su’s sinsarok stirred such interest in the advanced civilization of Japan that a Sinsa Yuramdan (Gentlemen’s Observer Mission)

was dispatched with a second envoy Gim Hong-jip (金弘集) in 1881.
