In 1817 (Sunjo year 17), Choe Du-chan (崔斗燦, 1779–?) followed his father-in-law to Jejudo Island when he was appointed the Daejeong county magistrate.
A year later, on his way back after studying on Jejudo Island, a storm pushed him off course and he drifted to China.
He was cast ashore at Ningbo (寧波) prefecture in China. Recognizing Choe Du-chan for his calligraphy and writings,
the Chinese helped him return home by way of Beijing. In his journal Ganghaeseungsarok,
volume 1 is on Chinese poetry and prose, while volume 2 contains his journals and addenda. In 1917, Choe Ji-yeong,
the great-grandchild of Choe Du-chan, had it published as a two-volume block book.
