A naval officer of the United Kingdom, Edward Belcher, was on Samarang to explore and survey the sea routes of China and nearby countries.
In June 1845, he arrived in a small island located on the eastern part of Jeju-do, Woo-do, to take the island as its base to stay about 40 days to survey Jeju-do
and Geomun-do and left his nautical chart and navigation record.
